Day 2, Another Little Poem

Suburban Birds of Puget Sound

With our identification guide

from the library, fresh cakes of suet

and peanut butter on pinecones,

we watch the patio instead of TV,

checking off such lowland species

as the Steller’s jays who squawk

at our cat, who chatters back

from behind our thick glass door

like the newscaster we’ve put on mute.
